A fine balance: Elka Ray and the expatriate writing life

Blame Djuna Barnes, Ernest Hemingway, or even Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris: it’s hard not to imagine the life of an expatriate writer as glamorously bohemian. But for Elka Ray, a Canadian writer-illustrator living in Vietnam, the writing life is one of equilibrium rather than excess.

In a recent feature interview for VTV‘s Vietnam In My Heart, Elka invited viewers to see how she balances business and family while negotiating multiple cultural identities.

She may be a writer and an expatriate, but to two small children, Elka is “mom” first. Here Elka joins her husband Thien for a q-and-a session on intercultural parenting that’s sure to interest globetrotters and parents alike!
